What Is Creative Embodiment? How Creativity Can Help You Connect With Your Body

For a long time I wasn’t sure how to bring “creativity” into my Somatic Coaching work.

I thought creativity had to look a certain way, like using paints, making messy art, or creating something that looked 'good'.

But creativity is much broader than that.

And humans expressing their own creativity is vast and varied.

In our day to day lives, it can be how we dress, decorate our homes, present a meal and generally how we infuse our life with this essence of 'creative joy'.

It can make life feel bright or colourful, special, lived in, and exciting.

Humans love creating, and viewing creativity and beauty.

What is creative embodiment?

Creative embodiment practices, or creative explorations, where you are in flow and in tune with your body and self in the moment, can do the same, and are a useful, alternative way to help you access, sense and express parts of yourself, that may feel less accessible or uncertain.

For when there are no words for what you're sensing or noticing, or it feels too fuzzy and unclear in your mind.

This is something I naturally weave into my Somatic Coaching work and creative embodiment practices.

You might use a journal, some paper and coloured pens or pencils (or even a sketchbook) to explore, express, doodle, make intuitive marks or write down anything that comes up during or between practices.

Not in a way that's pretty or logical.

Doodling and mark-making can help us express an energy, feeling or emotion, making it more tangible, more felt, and giving it space to be released, instead of ignoring it or pushing it down further.

The beauty of this is that you can't get it wrong, and you don't need to say it out loud.

And the more you do simple practices like this, which are process focused, rather than outcome focused, the more you start to soften towards the inner striver, who might be saying 'I can't make mistakes' or the inner critic 'you're doing it wrong, you're stupid'.

This is the magic of combining Somatics with creativity, as it creates new experiences in your nervous system and rewires the neural pathways in your brain, encouraging growth and the ability to adapt and form new habits.

What are creative embodiment practices?

There isn't one right way to practice creative embodiment. It can be as simple or expressive as you like.

Creative embodiment practices can include;

🌀Body-mapping your emotions or felt experience.

🖍Flow writing or journaling - aka brain dumping or embodied vomiting.

🧚🏼‍♀️Dancing, intuitive movement or creating gestures with your body that feel instinctive / representative of how you feel.

🫶Collage, painting, drawing or other 'craft' activities.

🎨Using colours and shapes to express what words can't.

✨Visualisation meditations.

and more.

These are varied, and offer a different lens to further listen and learn about yourself, the wisdom / intelligence of your body, emotions and help to strengthen your mind-body connection.

You don't have to be an artist to explore creativity

Another creative exploration I use is working with Archetypes.

Archetypes have been used for thousands of years as a creative way of helping us describe and make sense of our experiences.

For example, you might choose a quality or Archetype that resonates with you and then explore it through doodling, drawing, colours, words, movement or visualisation.

Rather than trying to analyse what it 'means', the invitation is to notice what happens when you feel or embody that quality for yourself.

It doesn't need to make logical sense and you don’t need to be 'an artist' to do this.

If you are someone who doesn't believe they are creative, this can be a great way to reclaim your creative expression!

How can creativity help you connect with your body?

Some people are naturally creative, and will just love using these creative explorations as part of their practice and process for healing, self-awareness, nourishment, expression or embodying more creative joy in their life.

It will just click and feel really helpful, connecting you with your playful inner child, or nurturing those vulnerable parts of you.

For others, learning to listen and be with their body isn't easy, and it may not feel safe to 'notice' or 'be with' their physical or felt experiences, so these alternative, creative options act as a gentle buffer for when things feel too difficult.

I've had people tell me that the creative options I give are powerful and supportive, when being in their body is too difficult, due to pain, health issues or past trauma.

Creative embodiment, choice and self-trust

Now, everything I offer is only a suggestion, and you get to choose what would work in your life - cultivating personal choice and autonomy, self-trust and boundaries.

Because we are all unique and we will need different options for our individual journey to body connection, creative expression and inner joy.

This is a place to experiment and learn to connect with yourself in new and different ways!
