LOCATION

Moseley Hive, 93 Alcester Rd, Birmingham B13 8DD

This workshop aims to provide you with the opportunity to play and experiment with your creative side, whilst finding a moment of calm by taking time out of your usual routine to connect with your body and brighten your Soul.

We will start with a slow paced Somatic Yoga session to help you feel more open, grounded and present, before settling down to a guided Yoga Nidra meditation for self-trust. These practices aim to help you with the expressive art.

Making art that doesn't have a particular outcome, can have a soothing effect on your nervous system, which makes you feel relaxed and open to explore the possibilities of your creativity without judgement. If you're only focusing on 'getting it right' or 'not making a mistake' you might find that you tense up and it makes it harder to settle or get into that beautiful meditative flow state.

All humans have creativity inside them, but some of us will express it more than others, or feel that this side of them has been nurtured.

If you allow yourself to breathe steadily, slow down and encourage it to the surface, who knows what will happen or how it will make you feel....

The Workshop Includes:

Somatic Yoga (gentle & slow)

A short guided Yoga Nidra

Expressive Art Session

Let those inner artists out to play and dance across the paper.

All materials are provided.

You will need:

To wear comfortable clothing, for moving and sitting down in.

Nothing too tight, restrictive or with baggy sleeves. From experience,

this can get in the way of painting!

We will be using a mix of paints which may stain (don't wear your best white top!)

Bring an optional apron / shirt to cover your clothes.

Bring some water to stay hydrated!

The word 'Somatic' comes from the Greek word 'Soma'

which refers to your living, breathing, sensing body.

Somatic practices, such as Yoga, Tai Chi, dancing, making art, going for a walk and even breathing, aim to guide you towards being more aware, present and understanding of your inner experience.

For example, the more you become aware (and pay attention to) your Somatic or bodily experience, the more likely you are to recognise your emotional needs and learn how to manage / cope with the ups and downs of life.

Rather than thinking, "I need to be calm all the time", it reminds you that you are human with a wide range of emotional needs that all need to be expressed and validated. This helps you grow your capacity and learn to respond or adapt to life in a healthy and non-harming way.

It encourages you to connect with the natural rhythms and cycles of being human - rather than forcing yourself into 'machine mode'.

Somatic Yoga is slower paced and encourages you to into this deeper listening and understanding of your body, by using 'familiar' Yoga postures and natural intuitive movement, simple breathing techniques and a few varieties and space for you to explore your own experience.

Main thing to remember is that Yoga is already Somatic,

but if the practice is heavily focused on the 'external' or aesthetic of postures, it often doesn't lead to embodiment or create long lasting change on a nervous system level.

What does 'Somatic' mean?

"Really enjoyable afternoon -

was great to take time out to do something totally different & mindful. The Somatic exercise was a new experience, I thought I’d be self-conscious but got quite into it. Afternoon was a good mix of movement, stillness & mindful activity.

I don’t think I’d change anything. Thanks for providing time & space for us x"

"After attending Sophie’s yoga and art workshops in the last 18 months, I feel that they have made a massive difference to my wellbeing. Sophie is a very engaging yoga teacher / artist who has inspired me to explore my creative side and prioritise time for myself. Whilst I’ve always loved yoga, I have never been an artist. I am now quite proud of some of my artwork which is all thanks to Sophie."

No - You don't need to be 'good' at art to join in.

I would say it's good to approach this with openness & curiosity,

however if self-doubt is present - it's welcome and totally normal!

Anyone can create and experiement, and this is a great way of nurturing the parts of you that don't believe you're worthy of being creative, or give you confidence to use art as a tool for self-expression, emotional guidance and inner child connection.

Expressive Art - also known as Intuitive Art -

is an opportunity to explore a variety of art materials in a playful and abstract way, whilst tuning into your body, breath, feelings and emotions. â€‹

Intuitive Art is Somatic, which ties everything together nicely.

This isn't art therapy, but it can feel very soothing and therapeutic.

I will guide you through warm up practices, and provide suggestions on how to get started. If you get stuck, you can ask questions.

The results can sometimes offer a pleasant surprise, however this isn't about perfection or creating a 'final art piece'.

Do I need to be good at Art?
